I couldn’t help but laugh at the remarkably culturally insensitive photo Time magazine posted online today about “native” Hawaiians for a story titled “Paradise Paradox: Why Life in Hawaii Leads to Early Death.
The photo shows a group of natives Hawaiians dressed in Tarzan-like clothing and launching spears. You have to see it to believe it.
It’s a shame that the editors picked such a culturally insensitive photo because it actually accompanies a rather interesting story that shows that even though most of us think Hawaiians live long lives in paradise new research shows that they die younger than most Americans.
We can’t show the photo due to copyright restrictions but if you want to see the photo, click here. I’m no politically incorrect prude but this was a bit much. I wonder what native Hawaiian President Obama would think about this photo? What do you think?
