Telemundo announces community-based local voter registration drives for 2016 to help empower Hispanic voters nationwide

Telemundo yesterday announced that its local Telemundo-owned stations will hold local voter registration drives this year across the United States to help raise awareness about the importance of civic participation and help increase the number of Hispanics who register to vote. The local voter registration drives, which will be hosted by Telemundo-owned stations located in 15 markets in partnership with local community-based not-for-profit organizations, are part of Telemundo Network’s #YODECIDO one-of-a-kind comprehensive and multi-platform effort that seeks to inform, empower and engage Hispanic voters in 2016.

Ximena Duque, star of Telemundo’s Super Series Dueños del Paraiso andCorazón Valiente, will register to vote for the first time since becoming a naturalized citizen this Friday, January 22 at Miami-Dade College’s Wolfson Campus in Miami, Florida to raise awareness about the importance of civic participation and help increase the number of Hispanics who are registered to vote. Viewers can watch Duque take this important step in the electoral process LIVE on Un Nuevo Dia on Friday, January 22 beginning at 7 AM ET (check local listings).

“All of our stations are deeply-rooted in the communities they serve and this hyper-local effort, which combines best-in-class national and local election coverage with community-driven voter registration drives, will help all of our communities get the information they need so they can be active participants in this year’s elections,” said Manuel Martinez, President, Telemundo Station Group. “Our local voter registration drives coupled with our newly launched Citizenship App – Examen De La Ciudadania – which helps viewers study for their U.S. citizenship exam, are important tools that our communities can use to empower themselves so they can make the important decisions they need to open doors of opportunities for themselves and their families.”

Local communities all across the country will also be able to participate in voter registration drives held by Telemundo-owned stations. The first Telemundo station local voter registration drive will be hosted by Telemundo’s West Coast flagship local television station, Telemundo 52 Los Angeles / KVEA on Sunday, January 31, 2016. The voter registration drive will be part of the station’s 12th Annual Prevenir es Vivir (to Prevent is to Live) health and wellness fair taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in partnership with the Los Angeles County Registrar-Record/County Clerk.

“We are very excited that Ximena is sharing this important milestone in her life with our viewers to help raise awareness about the importance of becoming an active participant in this year’s elections,” said Raquel “Rocky” Egusquiza, Vice President of Community Affairs, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. “We encourage all of our communities – particularly those in California, Florida, Texas, Illinois, Nevada and Colorado, which have more than 6 million eligible unregistered voters – to participate in their local Telemundo station #YODECIDO voter registration drive events so they can be fully engaged and help elect the leaders that will represent them, including the next President of the United States.”

In 2016, more than 28 million Hispanics or 13 percent of all eligible United States voters, will be eligible to vote. However, Hispanics remain underrepresented in most national elections with lower turnout rates than other minority groups in most elections.

Additional voter registration drives will be announced by the Telemundo-owned stations in 15 markets, including Los Angeles (KVEA), New York (WNJU), Miami-Fort Lauderdale (WSCV), Houston (KTMD), Dallas-Fort Worth (KXTX), Chicago (WSNS), San Francisco-Bay Area (KSTS), San Antonio (KVDA), Phoenix (KTAZ), Harlingen (KTLM), Denver (KDEN), Philadelphia (WWSI), Boston (WNEU), Las Vegas (KBLR) and Tucson (KHRR).

The community organizations that will partner with the Telemundo stations to host the local voter registration drives include the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), Voto Latino, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI), Mi Familia Vota, Hispanic Federation, Proyecto Inmigrante ICS, Inc., Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Latino Community Foundation of San Francisco, Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County and California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce located all throughout the Bay Area and The Advocacy Alliance Center of Texas (AACT) Now. Additional community partners are welcome and encouraged to join the Telemundo-owned stations in their effort to help inform, empower and engage Hispanic voters.

Launched in 2014, the Telemundo Station Group’s Citizenship App – Examen De La Ciudadania – enhances users’ studying experience by complementing the U.S. citizenship exam study material with English-language audio. The Examen De La Ciudadania app is currently available for download on iTunes and Android and provides users with all 100 exam written questions and answers for free. The first 20 questions and answers in audio format are also available at no cost and for a fee of .99 cents, users can access the remaining audio portion of the study material to use at their leisure. The app features four easy to navigate main options, including a Study Guide, the citizenship exam, a review portion of their exam answers and a “shareable” feature where users can share their successful test-results with friends and family via their Facebook and Twitter networks.

#YODECIDO, a one-of-a-kind effort to inform and empower Hispanic voters nationwide in close collaboration with the leading news organization of the country, NBC News, will bring an unprecedented 275 hours of political coverage, coupled by the deployment of a robust digital platform designed to reach younger voters and a partnership with Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Emmy Award winner Noticiero Telemundo anchors María Celeste Arrarás and José Díaz-Balart will lead #YODECIDO’s coverage, joined by more than 10 correspondents who will be documenting the political race nationwide. The Telemundo Station Group’s local voter registration drives are part of the national #YODECIDO effort and seek to raise awareness about the importance of civic participation, among local communities.
