Nielsen, a  global provider of information and insights into what consumers watch and buy, announces the promotion of Mónica Gil to Senior Vice President and General Manager of Nielsen’s new Multicultural Growth and Strategy team, effective immediately. Multicultural Growth and Strategy is a part of Nielsen’s External Affairs group and will drive business growth by providing market understanding and delivering comprehensive strategies to reach multicultural consumers.

“We are pleased to have Mónica lead this key effort in cultivating and measuring the evolving consumer strength of African-American, Asian American and Hispanic groups in the U.S.,” said Karen Kornbluh, Executive Vice President, External Affairs, Nielsen. “This new role underscores a business imperative for the company to help our clients understand and reach these important consumer segments in order to grow and succeed in a marketplace that is dynamically changing with rich diversity.”

Gil will be responsible for building cross-cultural competencies across Nielsen and its clients. She will focus on crafting innovative approaches to multicultural intelligence that will yield actionable solutions for clients and industry forums. She will also oversee the continued development of Nielsen’s Diverse Intelligence Series, a sequence of reports that provide marketers a closer look at today’s increasingly multicultural population. The series features in-depth insights into lifestyle, media and purchase behaviors of ethnic segments and has become an industry staple, helping brands delve deeper into additional facets of multicultural consumer behavior.

Gil will also work closely with Nielsen’s data and measurement sciences to help strengthen the company’s competency in ethnic segment research.

Gil joined Nielsen in 2004 and most recently served as Senior Vice President, Public Affairs and Government Relations. Prior to joining Nielsen, she was a senior member of former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s political campaign team and part of his historic victory in 2005. She also served as Press Secretary for the speaker of the California State Assembly and was Director of Public Affairs and Community Outreach for Telemundo stations in Los Angeles.

Gil has received numerous recognitions, including Hispanic Business Magazine’s 50 Influentials and Imagen Foundation’s Most Powerful and Influential Latinos in Entertainment. She was named a “Woman Worth Watching” by Los Angeles Business Journal and was inducted to the Hispanic Scholarship Hall of Fame in 2012. She currently serves on the Girls Scouts National Board of Directors and is a member of the national Latino advisory panel to the Kennedy Center.

Gil is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She received a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the University of Southern California School of Public Administration.
