Position Title:   Media Relations Manager

Overview:

Now in its second century, Audubon is dedicated to protecting birds and other wildlife and the habitat that supports them. Position Summary:

The media relations manager will play a key role in raising national visibility for Audubon’s activities, priorities, and leaders, including Audubon’s work in the Central and Pacific Flyways, Audubon’s International Alliances Program, and Audubon’s Toyota TogetherGreen conservation leadership program. As a member of Audubon’s media relations team in New York City, the media relations manager will be responsible for developing and executing strategic public relations campaigns, liaising with other Audubon communications and conservation program staff, securing high-quality coverage across the media landscape nationwide, and contributing to media coverage reporting.  This position is located at Audubon’s New York City Headquarters.  Please apply at www.audubon.org.

Essential Functions:

Secure high-quality media coverage at national, regional, and local levels across all types of media, including media that specifically serve African American, Latino, LGBT, and faith communities

  • Develop strategic media relations plans and campaigns; collaborate with other staff and partners
  • Develop, edit, and distribute press releases and statements
  • Craft personalized pitches for reporters, editors, and producers
  • Develop message and talking points
  • Deliver media relations trainings and strategic communication planning workshops for Audubon staff and partners
  • Assist with media coverage reporting for leaders and partners
  • Manage projects and campaigns on time and on budget

Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, marketing, or equivalent, with at least three years of experience Prior experience managing people/teams and logistics preferred

  • Proven track record of high-quality media placements (web, print, and broadcast)
  • Excellent organizational and planning
  • Strong writing and editing skills essential
  • Ability to write high quality material on short notice and on deadline
  • Strong team player
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with all major online media platforms and their roles in media relations and PR required
  • Experience with environment, energy, and conservation issues preferred
  • Experience with nonprofit communications preferred; PR agency experience a plus
  • Strong cultural awareness and experience with media outlets that serve the African American, Latino, LGBT, and faith communities required
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred
  • Vendor management experience preferred
  • Familiarity with AP style preferred
  • Working knowledge of all common office software applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) as well as media relations software required
  • Able and willing to travel and work nonstandard hours
  • Strong commitment to conservation and the mission and values of Audubon
