One in five women and 15.5% of men in Hispanic households suffer domestic violence. Domestic violence is a pattern of violent behaviors used to control a partner. While most commonly known as physical abuse, other more subtle forms such as emotional and verbal abuse are also considered domestic violence.

To specifically address domestic violence in the Hispanic community, Editorial Concordia, the Spanish division of Concordia Publishing House has released a Spanish resource; Violencia doméstica: Detección, prevención y ayuda (Domestic Violence: Detection, Prevention and Help).

While domestic violence is a problem in all ethnic and racial groups, cultural studies show that due to strong orientation to family, many incidents are not reported in the Hispanic community.

“A Latina’s sense of responsibility and culture is engulfed in her family. Leaving her family to seek help for domestic abuse is highly unlikely. With Domestic Violence: Detection, Prevention, and Help we’ve taken cultural considerations into account and made a relevant resource for the Hispanic community,” Multilingual Marketing Manager Marcia Wilhelm said.

In an effort to challenge social norms, Domestic Violence was designed to drive awareness, reveal the effects of the issue, and communicate best practices for dealing with victims. Book contents include a comparative analysis of four Hispanic communities along with clear characteristics of victims, group exercises, and specific ways to help.

“In this great tragedy of domestic violence, intervention can save lives,” author Dr. Celso William Chignoli said. “Do you want to bring relief to broken families due to violence? Get informed and inspired by reading Violencia doméstica: Detección, prevención y ayuda (Domestic Violence: Detection, Prevention and Help).
