Too often, we don’t stop to accept, appreciate and celebrate each others differences… This post on defining diversity appears on the PRSA Diversity blog, and was written by Randal B. Hayes. Randal is the community relations director and on-air personality for WARY FM, located in Valhalla, New York. He is a member of the PRSA New York Chapter and serves on the PRSA Diversity Committee. He blogs at Today’s Talk.
How would you define diversity? Diversity can be defined as understanding that each individual is unique… along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs or other ideologies.
To me, diversity means offering a different point of view to the discussion. All sides and points of view are heard and respected. Diversity by its nature welcomes and accepts difference.
