Mike Fernandez of Cargill is poised to become the first Latino to receive the Alexander Hamilton Medal from the Institute of Public Relations. Fernandez is chief communications officer for Cargill. Previously, Fernandez became the youngest press secretary in the history of the U.S. Senate, in addition to being the second Hispanic to hold the position. He also served as a longtime officer of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI). Fernandez currently sits on the board of the NALEO Education Fund, the advisory board of the AHAA (the Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies), and the advisory council for the Latino Donor Collaborative. In Minneapolis, Fernandez was a founder of Latino LEAD, which brings Minnesota Latino professionals together, and he’s on the board of The Brand Lab, an organization that seeks to make marketing and advertising professionals more aware of diverse people and cultures and provides internships for diverse students.
