Voto Latino’s María Teresa Kumar Named a 2014 Young Global Leader by World Economic Forum
María Teresa Kumar, the President and CEO of Voto Latino, has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic forum for her professional accomplishments and commitment to society. Kumar has led the nonpartisan organization, Voto Latino, for the last 10 years, which works to empower Latino Millennials to claim a better future for themselves and their community through civic engagement and civic participation.
Since the organization’s launch in 2004, Voto Latino has registered nearly a quarter-million voters and moved millions more to civic action through its digital and traditional media campaigns.
Kumar is one of 214 honorees who hail from 66 countries and all sectors of society (arts and culture, academia, business, civil society, media, politics, and social entrepreneurship). Young Global Leaders are selected from every region of the world. Drawn from a pool of several thousand candidates, the 2014 Young Global Leaders were chosen by a committee chaired by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of the Heshemite Kingdom of Jordan. Candidates are selected based on their proven track record of professional accomplishments, breadth of expertise, commitment to society, and ability to overcome adversity, among other criteria.
“I thank the World Economic Forum, its Founder and Chairman Klaus Schwab, and Her Majesty, Queen Rania Al Abdullah, for this great honor,” said Kumar. “I feel privileged to join my fellow Young Global Leaders and work alongside them to foster a more just world.”
Tapping into her political expertise and experience, Kumar is also an Emmy-nominated MSNBC contributor, where she provides opinions and analysis on the nation’s latest political news stories. In addition to her Voto Latino and MSNBC duties, Kumar serves on the national boards of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and the Latino Leaders Network. She is co-chair of the Aspen Task Force on Learning and the Internet, a frequent guest analyst on NPR and PBS, and an opinion writer for national publications.
