Nationally renowned blogger and ovarian cancer awareness crusader Jewel Figueras of Jewel’s Fab Life dies
WASHINGTON, DC – Nationally renowned lifestyle blogger and ovarian cancer crusader Jewel Figueras of Jewel’s Fab Life died peacefully this morning in her Washington D.C. home following a courageous four-year battle with the disease. She was 53.
“Jewel was larger than life and I will miss her company and her sense of humor tremendously,” said Angel Figueras, her Cuban-American husband of 14 years.
Born and raised in Washington, DC, Jewel was a passionate DC girl who attended and graduated from Howard University. She was living in the nation’s capital when, during a routine work trip to South Florida more than 15 years ago she met and fell in love with her future husband Angel, a corrections officer.
In 2009, Jewel started Jewel’s Fab Life and by 2010 her incredible writing chops earned her the award for Best Personal Blog in South Florida by the Sun Sentinel Newspapers. A gifted speaker and consummate networker who “never met a stranger”, Jewel was one of the most beloved multicultural community bloggers in the country and was especially close to the organizers of Hispanicize and Blogalicious.
Funeral arrangements are pending but will take place later this week in Washington, DC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance.
Jewel is survived by her children Dashaywn, 30, Jessica, 25 and Kendall, 21, her father Kenneth, mother Jewel (who she was named after) and her two brothers.
