NASCAR to Honor the 65th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army on July 4th Weekend

Screen Shot 2015-07-03 at 3.42.29 PMNASCAR announced today that it will honor the 65th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army, known as the “Borinqueneers,” in an nationally televised (NBC) pre-race event prior to the Coke Zero 400 Sprint Cup The Borinqueneers are a legendary regiment whose 20,000 members distinguished themselves as true American war heroes through combat in WWI, WWII, Korea and later conflicts. Martin Truex Jr’s Furniture Row car will carry the Borinqueneers insignia “Cross of Maltese” on the Chevrolet No. 78.

The Borinqueneers’ name derives from the original native word for the island of Puerto Rico. Its members have included many Puerto Ricans as well as Mexican-American and other Latino and Filipino soldiers. During the Korean War, the Borinqueneers were awarded 10 Distinguished Service Crosses, 256 Silver Stars, 606 Bronze Stars and 2,771 Purple Hearts.

The Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award bestowed by the U.S. Congress, has been awarded to minority veterans who served in segregated military units, including the Native American Wind Talkers, the Japanese American Nisei Soldiers and the African American Tuskegee Airmen. On June 10, 2014, the Borinqueneers received the same honor

Please join Borinqueneer veterans Sergeant Major Jos Coln (86), Command Sergeant Major An?bal Albertorio (85), Corporal Herman Col?n (87) and Corporal Pablo Burgos (86) at a ceremony to honor the Borinqueneers.
