Education: A priority topic for General Motors during Hispanic Heritage Month

General Motors participated in two conferences held by key partners during Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) and reinforced its commitment to education, civic participation, and leadership development for Latino youth.

To kick-off HHM, GM supported Latino Magazine’s Nuestro Futuro: The Latino Education Conference. The event provided a powerful forum to engage with Hispanic leaders and youth on how to continue buildingopportunities for diverse students pursuing science, technology engineering and math (STEM) careers.

Eric Peterson, VP of Diversity Initiatives at GM, participated as a speaker and introduced Chevrolet’s “Table of Brotherhood” roundtable discussion; a gathering of community leaders discussing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on four important issues: education, the economy, healthcare, and cultural diversity and tolerance. Key speakers at the conference were Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and Congressman Ruben Hinojosa.

Earlier this week, and to close a month filled with Hispanic celebrations, GM participated at the Hispanic Women’s Corporation (HWC) Professional Development & Leadership Institute, an annual event focused on providing the opportunities and resources Hispanic youth and women need to succeed. At the conference, Peter Langenhorst, Chevrolet’s Zone Manager, addressed the audience and announced the donation of a 2013 MalibuEco, Chevrolet’s first global midsize sedan, to help raise funds for the Hispanic Women’s Corporation initiatives.

Alma Guajardo-Crossley, GM Director of Diversity Initiatives also talked to the students attending the event about the importance of education in achieving great leadership success. She shared her personal story and motivated young Latinas to follow their dreams.

GM Diversity team took this opportunity to meet with key influencers and local media to discuss some of the challenges Hispanicsface in the community and explore ways to collaborate together.
