Congressional Black Caucus Spouses, SOME and corporate sponsors join forces to feed the hungry

WASHINGTON, DC – On September 24, 2009, the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses will continue a tradition of direct community involvement by hosting its 4th Annual Community Health Breakfast at So Others Might Eat (SOME) from 7 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.,  71 O Street, NW, Washington, D.C. The event is a large-scale community breakfast and health fair for the homeless held during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 39th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC).  This breakfast will once again be held at So Others Might Eat (SOME), a social service organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness. This partnership continues a relationship begun three years ago, when the combined forces of the Spouses and SOME provided breakfast and mobile health services to more than 500 homeless men and women.

“CBC Spouses and SOME’s 4th Annual Community Breakfast aims to provide the D.C. homeless with much more than just a full stomach,” said Simone-Marie Meeks, CBC Spouse Chair and wife of Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York. “With health screenings, dental check-ups and other services, we also aim to give homeless men and women a better chance at survival.”

This strategic alliance combines the CBC Spouses’ strong network of volunteers, contacts, and donors with SOME’s dedicated staff and relationship to the community. Together, both organizations will work to address the immediate and long-term mental, physical and material needs of SOME’s client population. In order to address the many factors impacting the quality of life of the nation’s homeless, the community breakfast will also feature community representatives and mobile health care providers offering HIV/AIDS testing, prostate, mammogram, glaucoma, podiatry, blood pressure, diabetes, dental and general health screenings services.

Building upon each year’s Community Breakfast, SOME regularly offers health services to the homeless on a regular basis while the Spouses continuously strive to hit their fundraising goals for scholarships for the next generation in addition to continuing their hands-on service to the community. The commitment of the CBC Spouses is supplemented by the many volunteers and corporate partners donating time and money to make the Community Breakfast as success.
