Look For Surge In Spanish SEO Demand

by Sebastian Aroca

Traditional wisdom regarding Spanish SEO campaigns would have you believe that, despite the fact that Spanish is among the most widely spoken languages on the planet, SEO campaigns in Español just do not work. They don’t work because most Spanish-speaking countries are still rather behind in connecting their citizens on the Internet, so there is not a whole lot of Spanish content on the web in comparison to English, Japanese, or other languages. It is a wonderful idea in theory but, in the real world, Spanish SEO just is not worth it.

At one point, this may have been true. Over the last 10 years, however, the Hispanic market has changed. More and more Spanish-speaking people all across Latin America are becoming connected and, as this has happened, the amount of Spanish content on the net has increased dramatically. The other, and more relevant, effect worth mentioning is that more and more Spanish speakers are performing searches. The last decade, where Spanish SEO campaigns experienced little to no success, is not at all indicative of the future. (more…)

Digital Divide Narrows as Blacks Increase Internet Usage

By Lisa E. Phillips, Senior Analyst, eMarketer

Evidence is growing to show that the infamous “digital divide”—the gap between technical haves and have-nots—is narrowing within the black community. Marketers that have put off digital campaigns targeting this demographic group are slipping further behind those that realized the potential this audience presents.

eMarketer estimated that nearly 64% of the black population is online in 2010—an estimate made in early 2010, based on the data then available. That percentage represents 24.2 million blacks.

Latinos Online & the Theory of Telepresence.

By Felipe Korzenny

As mediated communications increase in their importance, the question of how cultural differences may influence how people relate to each other in mediated situations becomes salient. Some time ago I published “A Theory of Electronic Propinquity” which basically states that the degree to which people are comfortable communicating via phone, teleconference, etc., varies with the degree to which there is a feedback mechanism in the channel, the complexity of the information being communicated, the skills of the communicators, the rules imposed on the communication, and the availability of alternative channels for communication that may be preferred over the current choice. A colleague Joe Walther at Michigan State University has done important research on the theory, but no one has done a cross-cultural comparison.
